He draws the circuit in pencil before a single wire is touched. This one habit prevents most of the frustration in term four, and it is the closest thing in the whole year to real engineering practice.

How to read the holes.
The two long lines at the top and bottom are the power rails. Everything along a red + line is joined together; so is everything along a blue − line.
In the middle, holes are joined in columns of five — A to E is one group, F to J is another. Column 7’s A-to-E holes are all the same electrical point.
The dashed centre channel separates the two halves — that is where a chip sits, legs straddling the gap.
A resistor and an LED must go in different columns — same column and the current skips the resistor entirely.
